Fish Oil - Is It Worth Taking

Just look for fish oil supplements that either say 'refined oil' or 'pharmaceutical grade'. With a high grade fish oil you need less than a regular one due to better apsorption. Krill oil, although different in phospholipid content, is otherwise basically the same as a high grade fish oil.

Thanks for this, so basically the Krill Oil is just an expensive way of buying decent fish oil?

Fish oils is one of the only things that i would take regardless....even if i stopped training all together

What is the rationale behind taking Omega-3 oils?

Anyone got any PROOF that we need them or that they're any better for us than butter?

Well never mind if they are healthier for you, the fact that fat loss speeds up and muscle gains increase is why i use them.

Perfectly good reasons :)

But why do they speed fat loss? Don't butter, milk, cheese, mayo and olive oil have the same effect, cost less and are more readily available?

I like all of those foods in both dieting and gaining diets but no i think fish oil works differently.
That said i would only eat pasture butter if i ate butter (probaly all they have in europe but in the states you have to be careful) as there is higher cla in the pasture butter. Cheese i would mainly eat made from raw milk as i think its easier to digest. Olive oil obviously only if its been stored in a dark container.
Fish oil thins the blood (just showing it has different actions than lets say olive oil).

Hmm, to be honest I never look at it like that, but now you mention it why not indeed? I enjoy the items in your list.

I was thinking about adding in Almond oil to my shakes after 'stealing' the idea from one of Mars's posts.

not long ago I was reading an interesting article in the BBC News (online) that some studies showing that kids were smarter if taking fish oils

IThe main point about Krill oil is that it's very pure and highly absorbable - so in that sense it's no different to a high quality fish oil. Where it does differe and give a potential advantage is that it contains a group of fats bound as phospholipids. These are vital for cell membranes of certain tissues and the body will readily snap them up as they are fairly hard to synthesise. Is slightly a sales gimmick to advertise krill oil just for these though as a much more commone food sources (egg yolks) contains them in a higher amount.

I have to say I don't believe any of the supposed benefits of eating Omega-3 or -6 oils over butter, milk, cheese cream and olive oil, etc.

They're all fats: fatty acids with the COOH acid group at one end. The Omegas happen to have the COOH group at the Omega - arse - end.

Course there are probably trace elements like iodine and phosphorus in fish oils that may be beneficial but humans have been eating both saturated and unsaturated fats for millions of years and they're broken down in exactly the same way in the body.

All natural unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids have their hydrogen double bonds on one side - the cis side.

Trans fats - fats made from oils by hydrogenation with a nickel catalyst - have their double hydrogen bonds on two sides, and cannot be broken down completely by the usual enzymes, so leave bits of fatty acid molecules swanning round our alimentary and vascular systems. Not good...

Is there any reason you take it every other day rather than daily mate?

From my understanding the fats stay in ure muscle cell for long periods of time so daily supplementation isnt needed. plus doing it this way fits into my meal plan as i replace the oil from one of my pro/fat meals pre bed with this
