Pull exercise recommendations

I haven’t been to the gym in a few months and am looking to start again. I want to build towards my first pull up. Which “pull” exercises are your favourite and would you recommend?

It's a solid goal to work towards. Pull ups are an excellent exercise and a good measure of strength I think. Personally I like the wide arm variation, if you're gym has it, use an assisted pull up machine and keep working towards unassisted. Generally, other pull exercises I'd recommend are; barbell rows, seated machine rows and close or wide grip lat pull down. Deadlifts are good too if you're looking to build overall size and strength.

How old are you?

If you're not beat up then Deadlifts, pendlay rows, barbell rows, perfect form and get stronger each session.

If you're like me and a bit beaten then seal row/prone row, chest supported rows, seated cable rows

Then pullovers, either machine, cable, or dumbell/barbell, pulldowns

Best way to get a pull up I've found with clients if you don't have access to an assisted pull up machine, is start with negatives. Increase the amount of negatives each session, slow them down and soon enough you'll be able to do one pull up, then two and before you know it you'll be doing sets for reps and weighted pull ups. Just takes consistency and practice
