Strongman To Bodybuilder

Wow man , massive loss in a good way

Tbf he looked pretty good nick in his big size too!

He certainly did not look too bad in his heavy state.

A friend of mine also made the switch due to health problems, and I was surprised at how little actual muscle those years of carrying an extra 100lbs had given him.

When he competed, he was only slightly bigger than when he had 8yrs before.

As much as extra bodyweight can help with truck pulls etc, I think a lot of it is psychological, and using it as an excuse to eat crap, hence the health issues.

How much has the 100lb loss affected his strength?

not sure if i like the before or after look better, absoloute unit before... ( obviously this isnt taking health into account)

The only thing that decreased strength wise was his standing over head press.
This be due to having a less solid "base" to press against.
But he was never insanely strong to start with ( 600/400/650 as core powerlifting lifts at 350lb)

His diet used to involve biscuits (American fatty version of scones) and 1 gallon chocolate milk per day to gain weight!

So pretty pointless to create the gas factory that must have been his arse taking in all that wheat and lactose :)

I think things like this are very useful to younger guys, esp strongmen who think weight is the secret, 'I have to get to 23st!', then they think their invite to the Worlds will be in the post.

A good buddy of mine was/is a pro strongman.
He went up to 400lb at 6ft1 and then had a cardiovascular event at age 27.
He is smaller healthier and no longer lifts these days....

Well I found out about my friends condition when I was watching a WSM qualifier, that I did not know he was competing at, and saw him struggling with things that would normally be within his capabilities.

After the event I called him over and asked if he was OK?

He said he has been in the hospital a few days before with his heart only functioning at 50% capacity, but thought this may be his last chance at qualifying for the Worlds, so hoped he may get lucky, and made me promise not to tell the organiser, who was another friend of mine.

Fortunately he dropped out after the next event, and is now semi healthy, but on meds.

At the time, achieving his dream was worth his life, but I think he could have been just as competitive 30-40lbs lighter without stressing his system so much.

Do you think there is a limit to body weight before health issues arise? Or is it totally individual? Ie one person can be 350lbs and be totally fine yet another can be 280lbs and get health problems?

zyzz had them at about 12 stone

Oh and to clarify I mean getting to the weights naturally without the aid of any drugs.

I don't think it is that black and white, but if you meet any of the WSM guys, you see that they are naturally big men, their joints, frames etc are naturally able to carry more weight, and as such I'd guess that in general, they will be healthier at heavier weights than a guy who has force fed himself over 20yrs to achieve the same weight.

There will always be exceptions in both camps.

As for drugs, I think the excess bodyweight people carry, and the calories they force to achieve this, is far more detrimental to health than the drugs they take.

Look at pudz 300-320 lean and totally dominant throughout. He was even right up there with with the static stuff.
Look at when Darren Sadler went under 105. Super strong great deadlifter and squatter and more than likely so much fitter than the 350-400 monsters. I think after a point bodyweight works against
