What’s the Best Home Gym Equipment for Beginners?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to set up a small home gym and could use some advice. I’m a beginner who mainly wants to improve strength, build a bit of muscle, and stay consistent without always going to a commercial gym.

With so many options out there such as dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells, adjustable benches, and even larger machines I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. If you had to start with just a few essential pieces of equipment, what would you recommend as the most versatile and effective?

Also, any tips on budget friendly but durable options would be greatly appreciated!

You could do pretty much everything with a set of adjustable dumbbells, a rack, adjustable bench and barbell. Just add plates as you need, I would go for and olympic bar with 2inch plates and 1inch plates for dumbbells (less cumbersome). I bought new way before the pandemic, you can probably pick stuff up cheaper on market place or ebay if you're willing to travel. I would say to ensure the bench and rack can hold a good amount of weight, buy cheap buy twice would apply here!

Wouldn't bother with bands or kettlebells - the above would see you well. That's pretty much what I have with the addition of an ez bar and rubber matting, mix of 2inch plates to 160kg & 1inch plates to 80kg.

Agree. I did exactly the same in March 2020. Just about managed to get them online before the supplies ran out for months!
