Why Are Whey Protein & Creatine Prices Rising in the UK and other countries? (2025 Update with Real Numbers)

So this topic came up in a previous post and as promised I did some digging online.

If you've been trying to stock up on whey protein or creatine lately, you likely noticed a significant price hike in the UK but it's not just a local issue.

Real Price Increases: What's Happening?

Whey Protein:
  • Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) prices surged by nearly 25% year-over-year in 2024, contributing to an average 13% increase in sports nutrition costs
  • Sweet Whey Protein (SWP) costs have risen by 87% over the past two years
  • Bulk Powders has increased their 1kg whey protein tubs to £44.99, up from previous prices, due to rising raw material costs
Creatine Monohydrate:
  • Prices have increased by 150%, with the price per kilo tripling due to a global shortage of raw materials

Why Are Prices Going Up?

1. Global Supply Chain Disruptions
  • Shipping Costs: Global shipping prices have increased by 330%, significantly impacting the cost of importing supplements
  • Packaging Costs: Cardboard packaging costs have risen by 45%, adding to the overall expense of supplement production
2. Increased Demand
  • The global demand for whey protein has surged recently leading to record-breaking prices
3. Currency Fluctuations
  • The weakening of the British pound against the US dollar has made importing supplements more expensive for UK consumers
4. Brexit-Related Import Fees
  • Post-Brexit regulations have introduced new customs fees and delays, further increasing the cost of supplements imported from the EU.

Is This a Global Issue?
Yes, the price increases are not limited to the UK. Countries worldwide are experiencing similar trends due to global supply chain disruptions, increased demand and rising raw material costs.

Good to know I'm not just getting old and being a boomer about everything getting more expensive! Places like Bulk and MyProtein should be the cheapest sources for supplements, though not that cheap anymore, but at least you can be confident in the quality and serving amount (third party tested).
